Prospect Avenue in downtown Danville will be closed to traffic on Saturday, June 23 for the dedication of the Fallen Hero Memorial for Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua "Chachi" Corral.
Motorists are advised to take an alternate route as Prospect will be closed between Hartz Avenue and Front Street from 9 a.m. through noon. The ceremony is set to begin at 10 a.m. in front of the Veterans Memorial Building.
Once the dedication is complete, those in attendance will walk to the town green (400 Front St., in front of the library) for a reception. Danville Police will temporarily halt traffic on Front Street while the group moves to the green.
Chachi Corral, a 2010 graduate of San Ramon Valley High School, was killed in action Nov. 18 during his first tour of duty in Afghanistan. The Corrals said they wanted to follow through with Chachi's wishes to support the needs of other Marines, and the Semper Fi Foundation was formed in December, just one month after Chachi was killed.
"The community has embraced our family with love, prayers, meals and donations beyond our belief," said Chachi's mother, Denise Corral. "We look forward to holding this event as a way of saying thank you to the community that has been so supportive."
The 5-foot 6-inch memorial sculpture sits on a granite base in a landscape planter area on the northeast corner of the Vets building. A "battlefield cross," the memorial features boots, a rifle and a helmet with two plaques -- one which describes the genesis of the battlefield cross and one dedicating the memorial to Chachi.
