A solo vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 680 snarled traffic and caused gridlock in both directions Wednesday afternoon, after a Contra Costa County Sheriff's patrol car overturned.
The accident was reported at 1:52 p.m. on I-680 just north of El Pintado Road, said CHP officer John Fransen. The vehicle was travelling at approximately 65 miles per hour in the No. 2 lane when another car stopped suddenly in front of it.
"The driver of the patrol vehicle took evasive action and changed lanes to the No. 1 lane. Unfortunately, the patrol vehicle lost control, traveled across all lanes from the No. 1 lane to the embankment where it overturned, landing between the far right lane and the right shoulder," Fransen said.
The two deputies inside the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure, Fransen added.
The right lane of I-680 remained closed till approximately 3:15 p.m. as CHP, the County Sheriff and Danville police attended to the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Highway Patrol.
