San Ramon Valley's annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will take place at 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the All Wars Memorial in Oak Hill Park (3005 Stone Valley Road, Danville). The Exchange Club of San Ramon will host the event in conjunction with local veterans organizations
The ceremony will include several guest speakers, hundreds of Scouts, an honor guard composed of local police and fire departments, the San Ramon Valley High chamber choir and a flight of doves. Larry W. Seaton, Honor Guard Badge 106, will be the keynote speaker.
"I think the importance of the community's involvement is intensified by the number of students who were not alive when 9/11 happened," said Exchange Club past president Karen Stepper. "It just makes it more important to remember America's role."
In this spirit, the Exchange Club is hosting an essay contest for students. There will be prizes for high school, middle school and elementary school winners.
"The topic is: Why do we have a memorial? Why do we have this ceremony? If they come to the ceremony, they'll have a better understanding of the topic," said Stepper.
To qualify, students must submit an original essay between 100 and 300 words to firstname.lastname@example.org by Sept. 23; winners will be decided Sept. 27. Students must include home telephone, the grade level as well as the name of the school attended or type of schooling being received.
