Rock star, former 49er help bag groceries for Safeway fundraiser

 | Rock singer Avril Lavigne helped bag groceries in Pleasanton this afternoon to help kick off a fundraising drive by Safeway to raise money for people with disabilities.
The drive is an annual campaign by Safeway in which shoppers can voluntarily donate to the cause at the checkout stand. The campaign raises
money for organizations including Easter Seals and the Special Olympics.
This year, shoppers at the Bernal Avenue store who donated $5 received a coupon and a code that will give them access to exclusive videos of Lavigne on tour and behind the scenes, organizers said.
Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark bagged groceries alongside Lavigne as part of a "celebrity bagging challenge."
Special Olympics athletes carried the organization's "flame of hope" to the store.
Other participants the 1 p.m. event included Safeway Executive Vice President Larree Renda, Special Olympics President Brady Lum and Easter Seals President James Williams Jr.

Posted by Catherine, a resident of the Danville neighborhood, on Apr 4, 2012 at 7:36 am That was very nice of Ms. Lavigne and Mr. Clark, but I have to say that I am sick of Safeway asking for donations for whatever the cause. They are not doing this out of the goodness of their heart; they are doing this for THEIR bottom line. Safeway is a GROCERY store and ought to act as such. I don't know about the rest of you, but I give my donations directly to the non-profit for the win-win of it. Why should Safeway get the "kudos" for money they donate from their customers and not from the profit they make from those same customers. Give me a break!

How much would you donate to a charity if someone didn't ask you to do it? Everytime I go and I get asked I throw in a couple extra bucks where I wouldn't otherwise donate. Now think of how many people do that. Many charities rely on companies like Safeway asking their customers to donate. If you are sick and tired of Safeway asking for money, go to Lucky's instead!

I know all the money goes to charity, but SAFEWAY donates it as if they gave it and then they get a huge corporate deduction making it look like they are such a great company (on the backs of their customers)!!!!
