Pair sentenced in San Ramon pimping case
'Mastermind' receives maximum sentence

Bookmark and Share
Two men convicted of running a prostitution ring out of San Ramon in 2009 and committing sex crimes against their underage victims are facing years in prison.

Duwan Fields, 33, of San Ramon received the maximum amount of time allowed under the law -- eight years and four months, according to prosecutor Chad Mahalich. Fields had been found guilty of two counts of pimping a minor prostitute and one count of unlawful sex with a 16-year-old.

Sacramento resident Claudiens Griffin, 21, received three years and eight months in prison, Mahalich said. Griffin was found guilty last month of pimping a minor prostitute, pandering for prostitution, rape and lewd acts on a 13-year-old.

Mahalich described Fields as the mastermind of the pimping scheme as one of the reasons for the big difference in their sentences.

"A lot of the reason is the significant age difference between the two," Mahalich added.

Authorities said three runaways were pimped to men by Fields and Griffin from a home in San Ramon over eight days in April 2009.

The woman from Sacramento, Jane Doe Two, testified she was a 17-year-old runaway from foster care when she and two other girls were told they could make money by wearing provocative clothing and posing for photos or appearing on webcams.

She told the court that she only realized she'd fallen into prostitution when she was being driven to her first client.

The woman, now 20, "realized that we actually would be having sex with other people."

"I think it was pretty obvious I didn't want to be there," she said.

Fields and Griffin made between $1,000 and $2,000 a night from the girls' clients, but the girls never received any of that money.

During the trial, Mahalich said evidence suggested that the San Ramon case wasn't the first time Fields had pimped girls and that there were more people working for him at the same time, possibly from his mother's home in San Francisco.

"Seems as if it has been going on at least since 2008, but it could have been longer," he said.
