Neighbors come together for National Night Out

Bay Area residents hit the streets tonight to attend hundreds of block parties being organized throughout the region for the 29th annual National Night Out.

Held annually on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out Against Crime has become a tradition that pushes neighbors to come together, meet each other and get to know the local law enforcement -- all to create safer neighborhoods.

The San Ramon Valley hosted dozens of block parties, with 11 in Danville alone, where residents turned on their lights, locked their doors and met neighbors. Police Chief Steve Simpkins and other members of the Danville Police Department visited registered parties.

"We hope this opportunity strengthens neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships," said Simpkins. "Events like this send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back."

Crime Prevention Specialist Carol Burroughs said Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich, a representative from Sen. Mark DeSaulnier's (D-Alamo)office, as well as the police's K-9 and motorcycle units, attended various events during the evening.
