 | Rotary Club of Alamo awarded its 28th citizen of the year award Sunday, honoring a long-time Alamo resident who has served on various councils and committees for over 20 years.
Nancy Dommes was given the award during the 30th annual Alamo Music and Wine Festival on Sept. 8. The Rotary Club of Alamo selects its citizen based on service, integrity, citizenship and a person's unique commitment to the community.
Dommes was described by colleagues as "the ultimate organizer" and an "asset to any group that she involves herself with." A former member of the Alamo Municipal Advisory Council and the P2B Citizens Advisory Council, she has also held numerous positions with the National Charity League including Diablo Valley Chapter president for 2000-2001. Dommes was also co-president of Alamo Women's Club and treasurer of the Alamo Community Foundation; she also founded the Scrip program at Rancho Romero Elementary School.
"What makes her special and unique is not just that she can lead and see the big picture of what is important for a group, but that she gets in and helps at every level as needed with compassion for all," a friend told the Rotary.
Additionally, Domme and her daughter have cleaned cat cages at Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation for several years. This empathy for animals and the community is illustrated by her theme when she was president of the Diablo Valley National Charity League, "Sharing Hugs."
The Rotary Club of Alamo was founded in 1971 and sponsors the Alamo Music and Wine Festival, which supports music programs at Alamo and Rancho Romero elementaries, Lucille Mauzy School, Stone Valley Middle School and Monte Vista and San Ramon high schools. This year's festival was held in Alamo Plaza and featured children's activities, music from The Fundamentals and California Acoustic Soul singer Alma Desnuda and, of course, food and wine.
