New bike racks debut downtown

Cyclists stopping in Danville during a long ride, coming downtown for events, shopping or great food will now have an easier time finding a place to leave their bikes. Beginning Nov. 1, the town of Danville will install several new bike racks throughout the downtown area.

Because Danville is a popular destination for cyclists, the Town Council called for a bike parking study and held community meetings on the issue in 2011 and 2012. As a result of the study, crews will install 39 new structures in 12 locations to hold a total of 78 bikes; downtown currently has capacity for 121 bicycles.

"Locations were chosen based on study our consultants prepared for us, their study was based on weekday and weekend observations of bicycle traffic within the downtown," said Traffic Engineering Associate Andy Dillard.

New racks will be located in the Clock Tower parking lot, on the 100, 300 and 500 blocks of Hartz Avenue, along the Iron Horse Trail, Railroad Avenue and the 490 Front Street parking lot.

The new racks are designed to be easier to use and able to accommodate more bikes, with post and loop racks along sidewalks and places with high visibility and U-racks in less visible locations. The post and loop racks, which feature a post into the ground that bisects a circle, are more aesthetically pleasing, Dillard noted.

Racks will be installed on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 as phase one of the bike parking project. Planners expect the next phase -- which includes installing racks on private property locations downtown -- to unfold over the course of 2013.

I wonder if consideration has been given to maintaining sidewalk space for our major Danville street events--July 4th Parade, Street Art fairs, etc..???????

Does anyone know?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a "loss" of space for chairs, standing room, walking room, etc--by these permanent fixtures forever on.

If these parking spots are down "side streets", then they are probably OK.

Having seen the years of "poor" planning done by our professional, highly-paid Danville Planners and politicians, I don't have much confidence that all factors and effects have even been considered.

And why is this the first time that I, as a citizen and resident of Danville, have heard of this plan to include bike parking (not that I'm against the idea in general)?

Why are there no notices and surveys of ALL Danville citizens without our having to go to extreme personal efforts to do something to be informed?

"They" really don't want or care about OUR input and ideas--which is why we end up paying for lots of STUPID results (like all the bulb curbs in downtown and the lack of sufficient handicap parking and senior parking RIGHT AT the senior center/Vet building). (And the lack of full second story on the Senior center.)

(And stupid Left Turning plan and lane markings around the Sycamore & Danville Blvd intersections.)
