Wednesday is another Spare the Air day

Bookmark and Share
Another Winter Spare the Air alert banning wood-burning has been issued for the Bay Area on Wednesday.

It is the eighth time the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued such an alert this winter season. The 24-hour wood-burning ban is
enacted when unhealthy air pollution levels are expected.

The alert prohibits residents and businesses from using fireplaces, woodstoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits or other wood-burning devices.

Fines can be levied for violations, although first-time violators are given the option of taking a wood smoke awareness class instead.

The Winter Spare the Air season began on Nov. 1 and runs through Feb. 28.

For more information about whether an alert has been issued, Bay Area residents can visit www.sparetheair.org or call the toll-free hotline at (877) 4-NO-BURN.

" The 24-hour wood-burning ban is enacted when unhealthy air pollution levels are expected."

1. I wonder how many of these "ban days" actually end up being a day with "bad air".

Of course, the standard of what is "bad air" can be jacked up from year to year. (It might even have an annual decreasing mechanism built into it--reduce the standard by 2% each year?)

The "experts" say it will be a bad air day, so they dictate your behavior. Obey their wishes or become a criminal.

How good were they at their prediction? You never see this statistic.

2. I'm so tired of having the "news media" establishment PARTICIPATE in the propaganda mechanism and policing method of us by their dissemination of the NOTICES of the banned days. But then they (the news media) are usually part of the liberal agenda anyway.

I could not agree with you more Pizzmac...what's next? Maybe they can train hundreds of wood smoke sniffing dogs to patrol at night, that way they can employ hundreds of dog handlers, build hundreds of "stack and pack" dog houses, and write more tickets.

I mean, you know, voluntary anarchy. Not trying to impose anything here.

Actually, JR, what they'll do is invent and acquire an expensive device that barely fits on the back of a flatbed truck and runs on diesel power, and they'll drive around-and-around, looking for violators. Kind of like what they're doing in the cancer detection field.

If asked, they'll proudly point-out that this is cutting-edge technology, and it works almost as well as a dog's nose! If ONLY there was a cheap place where they could go to get an ACTUAL dog, who would be enthusiastically willing to work for a decade or more, literally for kibble ...

I often despair for the future of our species.
