Man shot, injured by police after allegedly threatening officer with knife

Police shot and injured a Dublin man Friday morning after he allegedly walked toward officers with a large knife, a spokesman said.
Blaine Cox contacted police at 9:22 a.m. saying his son, Ryan Cox, 28, was causing a disturbance at their home on Frederiksen Lane, according to Lt. Herb Walters.
Blaine said Ryan was punching holes in his wall, and told police he was afraid of his son.
Officers met with Blaine in front of his house. As they were speaking to him, a suspect, later identified as Ryan, stepped out of the garage carrying a knife, described as being around 10 inches long, Walters said.
Ryan allegedly refused to listen to commands and walked toward an officer, who at that point feared an attack and fired several rounds.
Ryan was struck in the upper torso and arm, and was taken to an area hospital for treatment with injuries that were not considered to be life
threatening, Walters said.
Police plan to ask prosecutors to file a charge of assault with a deadly weapon against Ryan, Walters said.

Posted by Bill, a resident of the Danville neighborhood, on Jan 28, 2013 at 6:27 am This is but yet another example of the police departments inability to handle mental health cases and see it through the glasses of intent to do harm to the police. This is anything was an attempt at suicide by cop and if they had the brains and the ability to think of non-lethal methods many lives could be saved. Bean bag, taser, and a host of new technologies can protect the police from someone carrying a knife while they carry a 9mm.

None of the reporting regarding the recent spate of police involved shooting (including the recent fatal shooting in Walnut Creek) have there been any reference to use of the taser. Having been in combat I am loathe to second guess the individual in the situation but I am curious why non-gun confrontations are not being resolved with less force? Gun vs gun I understand but for knives and fists...I've seen a person tased and they stop pretty darn fast.
This is not about crucifying the officers involved as they have a difficult job as it is. I think the question deserves a thoughtful analysis by authorities and not just a "routine" internal review that seems to invariably lead to a conclusion of justified use of force. This is about improvement, not blame...

Whould you like to use the Taser, have it fail and lose your life because you made the wrong choice. Knife = Gun. The officer made the right choice and got to go home to his/her family. We don't have another police funeral. Until you do this job for 25 years, please don't assume you know anything about police work. It is with a heavy burden that an officer makes a split second choice which will be second guesed by many.
