The Ajax was the only team out of 64 to win every match it played in the tournament, scoring 25 cumulative goals while only giving up eight in the course of seven straight games in the entire tournament. The Ajax had to beat fierce opponents such as the No. 3-ranked Fresno Diablos in Round 1 of the tournament, the Pleasanton Ballistic United in a terrific semifinal match, and finally Bay Oaks Gold in the championship match.
The championship match was an epic battle, with two even clubs playing their hearts out. Bay Oaks struck first with a goal about halfway through the first half of play. The ball was ruled to have crossed the line though it was cleared in the air. The assistant referee ruled that the ball had in fact crossed the line. At halftime Bay Oaks led the match, 1-0. The Ajax countered with a goal about halfway through the second have to even the score 1-1 on a header goal from Bobby Edwards on a set play. Johan Sjogrell served a beautiful left-footed corner kick to Edwards. The score was 1-1 when regulation time ended.
There are two 15-minute overtime periods if a game is tied after the end of regulation. The first team to score during overtime wins the match, with a Golden Goal. If neither team were to score during overtime, the match would extend into penalty kicks.
Neither team scored in the first overtime. About 10 minutes into the second overtime period, Ajax player Mark Wenden struck a left-footed blast from about 30 yards out, placing the ball perfectly in the upper right hand corner of the goal, catching the Bay Oaks goalie by surprise and securing the win for the Ajax.
