FLASH Mustang Soccer Team (U12) takes 4th in Season Sunset Champions Cup Tournament
Sports, posted by George Opacic, a resident of the Danville neighborhood, on Dec 7, 2010 at 9:52 am

The Flash won two games on Saturday to advance to Sunday afternoon's Consolation Game at the 6th Annual District III Season Sunset Champions' Cup. Well into the second half, the Newark Pumas broke the 0-0 deadlock on a penalty kick. But Flash quickly answered back two minutes later with a beautiful goal made by Tyler Opacic who pounded a long high ball from the left side that the Pumas goalie was unable to handle. Noah Prince made many well executed crosses and corner kicks throughout the game but teammates were unable to push the ball through into the net. The score held at 1-1 through regulation and a 10 minute overtime period through relentless defense led by Adam Garcia, Jake Ober, Nathan Peers and Jack Sweetland.

The game was finally decided by penalty kicks with the Pumas successfully making 7 kicks versus 6 made by Flash in a wet and very rainy game. Flash players that connected successfully on their penalty kicks were: Adam Garcia, Jack Sweetland, Ben Breach, Jake Shurman, Noah Prince and Tyler Opacic. Flash goalie Grant Clark was successful in stopping one of the Pumas kicks. Clark made valiant efforts to get a hand on the other shots but the Pumas perfectly placed shots to the far left corner of the goal mouth allowed the wet ball to slip through into the net.

In earlier tournament action, Flash won 4-0 over the Ballistic Rockets. Nick Kurfirst put an early score on the board, followed by goals by Derek Galletly, Noah Prince and Tyler Opacic. Brian Mundellius was superb as goalie, diving and blocking shots on both sides of the goal mouth. The game was punctuated by good play at midfield by Adam Lee and Ryan Booth.. Sweeper Nathan Peers used his speed to kill any breakaways the Rockets had.

The Flash followed with a 4-0 win over Dublin Extreme on Saturday afternoon. Alexander Scott broke the ice with an early goal. Galletly, Prince and Opacic rounded out the scoring. Flash dominated control of the game with nonstop hustle and good play by Grant Clark, Jake Shurman, Mason Hinrichs and Ben Breach. Mundellius made several fantastic saves at point blank range to preserve his second shutout of the tournament.

Flash faced off against a previously undefeated San Ramon Revolution team Sunday morning. Both teams had previously won their games by large margins and were well-matched. In the 4-1 loss, Noah Prince scored the lone goal for Flash. Flash showed great effort and had a number of good scoring opportunities but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.

Flash's overall season record is 16-7-0, scoring 50 goals and 26 goals scored against. Their stingy defense recorded 9 shut-outs and ten different players scored during the 2010 season that began September 11.

Nine of the players are from Danville, five from Alamo and one each from Walnut Creek adn Lafayette.

The Season Sunset Champions' Cup is the end of season district championship tournament for U10, U12 and U14 Boys and Girls champion teams from seven Leagues in District III.
