A Good Game

World Series: 2010, San Francisco Giants vs. Texas Rangers. This was the series of "misfits" vs. the "new-bees". The last time the San Francisco Giants made it to the World Series was in 2002, but they haven't won the World Series since 1954, when they were still the New York Giants. The Rangers, however, have never made it to the World Series, before now. Both Ranger fans and Giants fans are supportive and loyal. The Giants are known for "torturing" their fans, with close games. But I don't think it has been "heavenly" for the Ranger fans either.
The thing with competitive sports is that there will always be a winner and a loser. Someone will be upset in the end. But, I can't help but think that fans can determine the outcome with their enthusiasm and positive attitude. You see, win or lose, it is how you support your team.
Okay here is a scenario… There are two friends; one friend is a Giants fan and the other is a Rangers fan. When one team wins, one of the friends will be upset. But you hope that the other friend will be respectful and not rub it in by saying, "Oh, I knew we would win", "We wanted it more than you", or "We worked harder than you guys".
The same concept applies to high school rivalry games. It is great to be proud of your school and support your team. I know one of the hardest things to do is be humble and not brag. But, now that I think about it, it is okay to brag a little bit and show that you are proud of your team. But, it is also important to remember when to stop. People who are on the "winning" side need to remember that things would be the hard for them if the situation were reversed.
I believe what really makes a "team", are the fans. There are fair-weathered fans and die-hard fans. But no matter which fan you are, we need to be respectful of the other team and their fans. We are all looking at the prize. Fans are the "fuel" that feeds the fire of success for a team, whether it is the World Series or any other competitive sport.
Sitting on the couch, the two friends watch what would be the last game of the World Series, as the winning team makes the final out. They both jump up and turn and look at each other and smile. The hug that is given was filled with respect. Because they both got what they wanted in the end… a good game.
