Enhancing Community’s Building By David Miller

Danville is known and loved for it’s preservation of its history that gives our community a very special appeal. When the decision to rebuild the Veterans Hall was made, it was imperative to design a building that preserved the architecture of yesteryear and build a structure that met the modern and growing needs of the Danville community today, and the needs of our valley’s Veterans.

It was decided early on that the face of the structure must be preserved, yet a slight alteration was needed! For more than 50 years Danville has celebrated July 4th with a parade. Year after year Veterans, community lead ers, citizens and town guests would squeeze onto the steps of the old Hall to watch the parade. Dignitaries and Vet erans waited anxiously, shoulder to shoulder to wave and salute our beloved Veterans who marched by in the parade. Marching Veteran participants would pass the Hall proudly just to salute our VIPs and looked forward to being saluted back by town officials. What a proud moment that passed by so quickly!

Well, a new atmosphere is being created! The face of Veterans Hall will be preserved and will appear as it did in 1922, but a small significant alteration is being added. Two large windows, one to the left and right of the front entry door, will be changed to beautiful French doors. Exiting either of these two doors will place the building’s guests onto one of two beautiful terraces. Each terrace will be surrounded and encased with waist high protective walls that will give a sense of beauty and security.

These terraces will allow clear visibility onto Hartz Avenue and allow one and all to be seen. When our 2012 Fourth of July Parade is celebrated, a large crowd can gather on each terrace to enjoy the parade and honor all passers by. We can honor our local Veterans, dignitaries and guests in a VIP atmosphere without feeling crunched. It will also be a place of honor all year long when “The Sentinels of Freedom” are welcomed home! The New Terraces will be enjoyed all year long by Veterans and their guests as they will now be able to sit outside and enjoy a warm or cold beverage and camaraderie.

What a great idea that places a new form of enjoyment to the historical significance of our old Veterans Hall. This will be a beautiful center for seniors, weddings, fundraisers, business conferences, and your events!
