Remembering the dream
Students in Tami O'Brien's first-grade class at Montair Elementary School in Danville created artwork talking about their dreams of peace and loving their families last Friday, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was a federal holiday Monday for schools. The class also listened to a recording of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, which he gave more than 40 years ago in Washington, D.C., and sang a song about King.
The holiday is on the third Monday in January, and it was first celebrated in 1986. King, who was born Jan. 14, 1929, led the Civil Rights Movement, which resulted in social and legal reforms enacted to end racial discrimination against African-Americans and other minority groups.
