Sad night for US

Dear Editor:

For all USAmericans, Jan. 10 was a very sad night.

We, as USAmericans, witnessed a failure created at the beginning of the Iraq war and a resolution that must come now from other than George W. Bush. In Mr. Bush's speech, his body language illustrated surrender of the responsibility that was only amplified by his delivery of political jargon and his inability to make sense of any plan moving forward.

I am deeply saddened by this result because WE, as USAmericans, allowed this failure to compound over the past four years. More importantly, we must suffer the impact in global economy, community and humanity created by our participation in the resulting uncivil, tribal war.

WE gave George W. Bush election to the White House and the opportunity to create this failure, start to finish, and WE must take responsibility for its long-reaching impact on our economy and humanity. We are now alien to a global economy and community and clearly lack the leadership in government to resolve our global role going forward.

Jan. 10 was a very sad night.

Mother Earth is smiling

Dear Editor:

On behalf of everyone at Electronic Waste Management, we would like to say a special thank you for helping make the e-waste recycling event Jan. 5-7 at Diablo Valley College the largest event we've had to date there. Our DVC events are always large, but this one took the cake!

We processed over 3,300 cars during the three-day event. The majority of the people dropping off their e-waste were from Contra Costa County, but people came from as far away as San Jose, Marin, San Francisco and San Bruno.

And although we won't know the tonnage of the e-waste we collected for some time, it has to be more than several hundred thousand pounds - if not much more. All of which will be recycled and kept out of landfill. Not to mention the money people saved by being able to dispose of the e-waste at no charge.

Our events would not make such an incredible impact without the support of the entire community. So - thank you very much for your help in letting the Danville and Alamo community know about our events. We appreciate it, and I hope Mother Earth is smiling!

Rhonda Chaikin, Electronic Waste Management

Best mileage ever

Dear Editor:

In keeping with my New Year's resolution never to tell a lie in 2007, some may know I'm retired from Chevron, and was transferred by them from downtown Houston, Texas, to Chevron Park in 1985. The following may be of interest to Danvillites interested in knowing the all-time best gas mileage.

We all know that Columbus believed the world was round when others believed it was flat and that if you traveled far enough you would go over the edge. We also know that Columbus reached what we now know as America.

While there are still a few who believe Columbus returned to Spain and told Queen Isabella that he discovered a new world, most believe he had told her he had reached India.

Recently documents written by Queen Isabella's official scribe were uncovered revealing that Columbus set a mileage record on returning from his first voyage. His first words were, "I'll bet I'm the first man who ever got nineteen hundred miles on a galleon."
