Weekend drowning claims 10-year-old
Neighbors attempt CPR on girl found in swimming pool
Tragedy struck a Danville family this weekend, as a 10-year-old girl drowned Saturday in the family's backyard swimming pool. Danville Police Lt. Mark Williams said dispatchers received a call at 2:40 p.m. from a distraught woman in the first block of Sky Terrace on the town's west side.
Officers arriving on the scene found neighbors providing CPR to the girl. A 19-year-old woman, identified as the child's nanny, told police that she had last seen the child 15 minutes earlier in the house. Police reports indicate the nanny found the child missing from her room and immediately began searching for her, finding her moments later on the bottom of the family's pool.
The nanny dove in and recovered the child, got her out onto the side of the pool, and began yelling for help. Nearby neighbors rushed to the back yard and started CPR while the nanny called police. Officers at the scene continued CPR until paramedics arrived and transported the child to San Ramon Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 3:47 p.m.
Contra Costa County Coroner's officials said a forensic examination was conducted Monday, and cause of death was found to be asphyxiation due to drowning.
Williams said the coroner's assessment is consistent with information officers received at the scene that the death was accidental.
Obituary announcements from C.E. Stewart Chapel in Rio Vista list the identity of the victim as Shelby E. Tudhope.
